We love our VAs and do what we can to help the world learn more about them. This week in the VA Spotlight:
Get to Know Monique Cunningham!
With my kids getting older, I felt it was time for me to do something for myself. Because I still wanted to be present for my children, the only option that made sense to me was to work from home. I met a virtual assistant while at a scrapbooking retreat. After probing her about what she did and the freedom she had, she told me to check out AssistU.
I went home and researched the company. I called her back with two questions: 1) Can I really make money doing this? 2) Will it interfere with being a mom? Her answers: yes and no. The opportunity to be in business for myself and make money for my family also appealed to me. Did I mention I have three teenagers? Can you say “need lots of money?”
After reading about what being a Virtual Assistant was and entailed, I realized all the organizing, planning, and implementing I had been doing for years, as a volunteer, could actually be done and I could get paid to do it! Duh!! Why wouldn’t I do this?
I realized that becoming a VA was a perfect fit for me and my family. Being self-employed appealed to me for so many reasons: control of time, no boss to answer to, and the freedom to do the work I liked to do. I believe being a Virtual Assistant has enabled me to use all my God-given abilities to not only help my family, but also help stressed-out business owners achieve a work-life balance.
Interestingly enough, I have *never* been an administrative assistant. My background is in public relations and fundraising — both of which have served me well as a VA. I tell my clients I have a bit of a marketing mind. It’s just who I am. I can’t turn it off. While at first I thought I would be a generalist VA, I quickly was pushed in the direction of a techy VA through my introduction to Infusionsoft. It came easily to me. Now all of my clients use Infusionsoft. So I guess you could say I’m a bit of an Infusionsoft junky/guru.
My biggest passion is working with mompreneurs. I was blessed to be able to be a stay-at- home mom for 16 years. I wouldn’t trade that time for anything. I want other moms to experience what I experienced. I want them to believe that they can have it all too: a successful business and a successful, happy family life. By taking administrative items off their plates, I free them up to be with their families. And to me, that is a beautiful thing.
