Virtual assistants are incredible humans, supremely gifted at supporting others—often quietly navigating shifting priorities, vague instructions, and long silences where clarity would go a long way.

If you’re lucky enough to work with a VA, she is, by nature and profession, focused on being helpful, responsive, and reliable. Most of the time, though, that means she won’t tell you what she wishes you’d say out loud.

But if she could pull back the curtain just a little, here’s what she might like to hear from you:

“Here’s the bigger picture.”

A VA wants to understand the why behind your requests so she can support you strategically, not just tactically. Context leads to better decisions, clearer priorities, and fewer do-overs.

“Tell me what you need to do your best work.”

Success isn’t just about getting tasks done—it’s about being set up to thrive. Your VA has insight into what makes systems run well, and what she needs to do her work for you well. Invite her to tell you.

“What do you think we need for this?”

This question shifts the dynamic from instruction to collaboration. It communicates that you value your VA’s perspective and trust her judgment. It also opens space for proactive problem-solving and co-creation—two keys to strong, lasting partnerships.

“I don’t expect you to read my mind.”

Clarity is kindness. Your VA would much rather know exactly what you need than be praised for guessing right. Be specific. Overcommunicate.

“I truly appreciate you/what you’ve done/how you show up/the effort you always make for me”

It might seem small, but it isn’t. A little appreciation goes a long way in reinforcing trust, motivation, and always fuels a desire to go above and beyond.

Saying these things out loud, in email, or in any way that you usually communicate—directly and with intention—reminds your VA that she’s seen, respected, and trusted. And when a VA feels that? She rises. When she rises? You bet—you rise.
